4Aquabac: Great Green Product for Mosquito ControlJun 17, 2011
By O. Miskiw "Osmo"
The mosquitos in our area of SW Alberta were bad in the summer of 2008, so I finally got serious about looking for a solution, and soon found this little-known new product at a couple of farm supply stores.

It looked easy to handle and promised to safely clear mosquitos from ponds at least, and we had several of those around our acreage. The bugs were at their worst when I brought home a can of Aquabac for about 20$ and immediately went about devising a practical way to distribute it. Presumably the bacteria would eventually swim, wiggle, or otherwise be carried throughout the volume of each pond by water currents, but it seemed obviously best to give them a jump on their work by spreading them around as much as possible from the start. So I mixed the Aquabac granules with water in a 3-gallon bucket and then set out to walk around each pond (typically 60 ft diameter) and splash the solution around the surface with a small plastic cup. The weight of the water gave the product the momentum to fly 20 or 30ft with every toss, and in that way I treated 5 ponds near our house in a couple of hours, then went inside to wait for results.

The mosquitos buzzed just as before for about 3 days, but about the 5th day we noticed a major drop in the plague for no other apparent reason: no low temperature or strong winds, etc. I still had about 200gm of Aquabac granules in the can, so after about a month I repeated the job and used it up, and the mosquitos were hardly noticeable for the rest of the summer.

In 2009 I got another can of Aquabac for about 30$ and thought it was still good value if it actually worked, and again it seemed to, though there were not as many mosquitos as the previous summer anyway, so I still ended up with about 150gm of Aquabac left over. And just as well, because in 2010 it was discontinued at the usual supplier, and I was too busy to do much hunting for another source or product. Again the swarms were less of a problem than the previous 2 years, so its benefit was not as obvious.

Now I'm happy to see that Aquabac is still available and its price seems reasonable, and I'm keen to continue using it and prove its effectiveness, which is still only anecdotal though we already feel this is the real ticket.
